Managing Product Units

Last updated: 15 February 2025 · 2 min read

BillBook allows you to add custom units, use multiple units, and track secondary units for accurate inventory management.

Adding Product Units

  • Go to → Products → Units → Add New Unit
  • Fill in: Unit Name, Short Name, Allow Decimal (Yes/No)

Note: Allowing decimals enables selling/purchasing in fractional values (e.g., 1.5 kg of rice).

Using Multiple Units

Sometimes products are purchased in one unit but sold in another.

Example: Purchased in Dozens (12 pieces), Sold in Pieces.

Setup:

  1. Add the smaller unit first (e.g., Pieces)
  2. Add the larger unit (e.g., Dozen)
  3. Check Add as multiple of another unit
  4. Enter the conversion details (1 Dozen = 12 Pieces)

Note: All purchases & sales are stored in the smallest unit.

Using Secondary Units for Products

Secondary units help track products where the sub-unit varies each time (e.g., Stone Blocks — each may weigh 10kg, 20kg, or 30kg).

  • Go to → Settings → Business Settings → Products
  • Enable Secondary Units

Note: Secondary units are for tracking only and do not affect inventory calculations.
